Read MoreThemed cruises have become increasingly common in recent years, with several cruise lines incorporating themed itineraries into their season programmes to give cruisers the chance to indulge their hobbies on the high seas. But what are themed cruises, and how do you choose the right themed cruise for you?
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know, whether you’re new to cruising or considering something different for your next voyage.
What Is a Themed Cruise?
Themed cruises are itineraries that centre around a particular interest, hobby or fandom. While regular cruises offer a standard range of activities, from evening entertainment to water activities, themed voyages focus on a chosen theme and offer concerts, workshops, lectures, games, and excursions that relate directly to it.
Around the cruise ship, you might also notice that the interior design makes nods to your itinerary theme, completing the immersive experience. The crew may dress up, and there may be themed food and drink options too.
What Are the Different Types of Themed Cruises?
Plenty of themed itineraries are available across the world of cruising, and no two experiences are exactly alike. The following include some of the most popular examples.
Music & Festival Cruises
Love music? For voyages packed with exclusive concerts and musical parties, music- and festival-themed cruises might be the perfect choice. Examples like the Smooth Jazz Cruise from Celebrity Cruises or the Monsters of Rock Cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line offer plenty of events and activities for guests to get involved in.
TV, Film & Pop Culture Cruises
If you can’t get enough of your favourite films and television shows, these cruises are for you. Guests can battle it out on quiz nights, dress up for exciting parties and even meet the cast and creatives behind their favourite shows and movies. Popular examples include Celebrity Cruises’ Golden Girls cruise and the Star Wars and Marvel itineraries from Disney Cruise Line.
Sport, Hobby & Lifestyle Cruises
Many cruise lines design themed cruise itineraries around particular sporting events and hobbies, such as Monaco F1 Grand Prix sailings, Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix packages or the British Open-themed cruises. These itineraries are organised to ensure the ship is in port to coincide with big events, and they usually include overnight stays so you can make the most of everything going on.

When Did Themed Cruises Become Popular?
Themed cruises have recently picked up in popularity, but they are not a new phenomenon. They have a long, storied history and are as viable a holiday option as any other type of cruise. The earliest of these voyages date back to the eighties, with NCL’s Floating Jazz Festival of 1983 being one of the first.
At the start of the 21st century, interest in themed cruises boomed. Annual highlights like the KISS Kruise took the cruising world by storm, and the themed cruise market diversified, offering a wide range of experiences. Today, many major cruise lines offer themed sailing, from P&O Cruises and Royal Caribbean to Saga Ocean Cruises.
Who Puts a Themed Cruise Together?
Themed cruises can be organised differently, depending on the particular itinerary:
Partial-Ship Group: A themed group may book a block of cabins on a regular sailing to provide a themed experience within a specific area of the ship.
Cruise Lines: Many cruise lines will curate their own themed itineraries. P&O Cruises, for example, directly runs its own Food Heroes cruises.
Full-Ship Charter: An organiser may book the entire ship to host a single theme that characterises the entire voyage.

Onboard Themed Nights vs. a Full Themed Cruise
While researching cruises, you may have noticed that some itineraries include themed nights, but how do these differ from entire themed cruises?
As we’ve touched on, themed cruises are tailored to a specific theme or event, with parties, activities, and decorations consistent throughout the voyage. These are not to be confused with themed nights, which are single-night events on regular voyages. Examples like Pirate Night and Gala Night are usually held in a specific area of the ship and are completely optional for guests to participate in or avoid.
Is a Themed Cruise Right for You?
Interested in a themed cruise but unsure whether it’s right for you? These itineraries are a lot of fun, and we strongly recommend them as a great way to enjoy a cruising experience and meet fellow passengers who share your interests.
Themed cruises are excellent for groups of friends who want to take on the parties and activities together, couples who have bonded over their mutual love of the chosen theme, and even solo travellers who are looking to socialise with other likeminded guests.
These cruises can sell out quickly, so if you have questions about booking a themed cruise or want to know how they work, one of our friendly Cruise Experts will be happy to help.
