Azamara Journey

Our first cruise with Azamara having previously sailed with P&O.

We like smaller ships and having never been to this part of the world before were attracted to this itinerary by overnight stays in some ports.

Our experience started with a surprise at Heathrow.

As we were checking in when an Azamara Club Cruises/Celebrity cruises representative approached us and as well as ticking us off her list wished us a wonderful holiday.

BA flight to Singapore was smooth and our transfer to the Marina Mandarin Hotel for 2 nights was excellent.

Just about enough time to do a little exploring around Singapore before embarkation.

I cannot fault this either.

We were told when to present ourselves together with properly tagged luggage in the hotel lobby and we were taken by coach to the cruise terminal where embarkation was smooth and straightforward.

Our cabin was ready – and kept spotless by our Steward throughout the trip.

Azamara operate a more inclusive policy with regard to drinks.

So house wines, some spirits, soft drinks, tea, coffee and bottled water were all included.

We found this to be very good.

Being hot we drank a lot of water throughout the trip and small bottles were always available in our cabin and also in large tubs as you went ashore so you could help yourself.

It was a treat not to have to sign a chit every time you wanted a cup of tea.

Nice touches on returning from excursions such as a cold towel and drink and when we travelled further north and the weather became cooler hot chocolate with a shot of rum! Dress is smart casual (no black tie nights) and open dining.

Plenty of tables of 2 if you wanted to dine alone.

Our fellow passengers were a nice mixture of nationalities US, Canadians, Australians, Brits.

the majority were well travelled and very friendly.

Food in main dining room excellent and tried both speciality restaurants but for us Prime C steak restaurant just had the edge.

On one evening the crew moved all the tables and chairs from the Looking Glass (Crows Nest) and other restaurants to create an outdoor dining room around the pool with properly laid up tables.

A wonderful buffet was served and entertainment provided by an excellent singer.

We marveled at an incredible logistical challenge.

Next morning all the pool loungers were back in place with their distinctive towels ready the the sun worshippers! Ports of Call – Ko Samui, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Danang, Halong Bay, Hong Kong.

All fascinating and different.

Disembarkation was once again very smooth and the Captain and other senior officers were on the gangway to say goodbye to everyone, another very nice touch.

We stayed 3 extra nights in Hong Kong and our BA flight home was right on time.

We found Azamara to be a step up from P&O in almost every aspect.

If your looking for wow factor Azamara is probably not for you – its more understated but with excellent service from the crew to allow you to really enjoy the ship and places your are visiting.

We will certainly be cruising with Azamara again.
